A WordPress widget is a small block that performs to display a specific block. WordPress widget is to display content and features in the sidebar of your page. In WordPress install default widget already set like search widget, meta widget, category widget etc. That is all basic widget and so if we need that simple then no need to create for the post related widget.
- They can be easily dragged and dropped in a widget area.
- They help you add content, image, video, and features.
- These widget-ready areas can be in the header, footer, sidebar, below content, and basically any other area in your theme.
- WordPress by default comes with several widgets including categories, tag cloud, navigation menu, calendar, search, recent posts etc.
How to Display Widgets
When you are going to add widget first you should check that your current theme is supporting widgets or not. That you can check on the appearance of a menu having submenu “Widgets”.
If your theme support widget then you follow the below step to add a widget on your website sidebar or a footer if the theme will provide that functionality.
Step 1: First you need to go widget page from Appearance > Widgets when you open this page you will see screen that looks like as below.
In above screen, you can see that’s having the main sidebar as a name such that will display in home page or a blog single page by default if you wish to display it any other place then you can do that.
Step 2: In that step first you need to find out your widget that wants to display in a sidebar that you can find the exact right side of the wp-admin dashboard menu.
Step 3: After selecting your widget to click on that widget so that will give on the drop-down menu that contains the name of the all widgets area provide by theme so from that you need to select on widget are where you wants to display. And another method is very simple you can also drag and drop your wished widget in any of the widget areas.
Step 4: In final step after widget added then in widget area you can set its name and all the other details required as per you type of widget, fill it and click on Done button to complete that widget saving process now you widget successfully show in your sidebar or a footer where you have placed your widget.

The following options appear on this widget area page:
Available Widgets − You can use these to add into your sidebar main.
Inactive Widgets − Removes the widgets from sidebar but keep it in the settings.
Inactive Sidebar − These are not used and can be removed permanently from the widget list.
Sidebar Main − Any widget you add here will appear on your site.
